Are you using a MS wireless mouse? There was a problem with these that was fixed with a patch you could find on MS support site. The issue was that the PC wouldn't go into screen saver. The reason was that the wireless mouse was looking like it was moving just a little, and that kept the screensaver from kicking in

Upon startup (whether a cold boot or awakening from hibernation), my mouse is occasionally frozen. Only a cold reboot restores mobility. Sometimes I have to reboot twice but a warm reboot never does the job. I normally use a PS/2 mouse but I have tried several others with the same behavior.
